🌐 How the Internet Village Technical Community Runs the Internet

— Building Africa’s Digital Backbone from The Gambia to the World
To most people, the internet seems invisible—something that just works. Much like power lines hanging silently above us, we rarely think about the infrastructure that fuels our everyday connections. But at Internet Village, we know better. We build, run, and protect the foundation that keeps communities connected.
From satellites in space to servers under the ground, Internet Village is powered by a deeply rooted, people-led technical community—working across borders and disciplines to bring high-speed, resilient internet access to every African home, classroom, and business.
🔌 What Does Internet Village Infrastructure Look Like?
Despite its invisible nature, our internet isn’t powered by magic—it’s powered by cables, code, and community.
🌍 1. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite Connectivity
Through Wixad Software Technology and Starlink-powered LEO satellites, Internet Village bridges the gap for remote and rural areas. LEO satellites orbit closer to the Earth, drastically reducing latency and delivering faster, more reliable internet—without the need for traditional underground cables.
🌐 2. Internet Exchange Points (IXPs)
Our IXPs keep local traffic local, enabling efficient communication between networks within the same region. This reduces international data routing, improves speed, lowers costs, and enhances digital sovereignty.
🏘️ 3. Internet Village Community Networks
When large telecoms won’t show up, we do. These are community-powered networks, built by the people, for the people. They’re custom-built to meet local needs, bringing affordable, grassroots connectivity to villages and neighborhoods ignored by traditional ISPs.
🖥️ 4. Internet Village Root Servers & DNS
At the top of our digital ecosystem lies the Domain Name System (DNS). Our root servers translate your requests—like visiting a website or sending an email—into machine-readable instructions, making your online actions possible and secure.
👥 Who Makes Up the Internet Village Technical Community?
Our technical community is a diverse, skilled, and purpose-driven group:
Infrastructure providers who build and operate LEO systems, IXPs, data centers, and towers
TIVVET engineers & apprentices trained in our vocational programs
Software creators & developers who build our websites, apps, platforms, and e-commerce solutions
Educators & policy shapers who create an enabling environment for growth
Youth & local champions who repair devices, run network nodes, and keep communities connected
Together, they form the backbone of our mission—to create a truly African Internet from the ground up.
🚀 Why Does Infrastructure Matter?
Infrastructure is the difference between being connected and being left behind. It’s the key to:
📚 Education for children in rural schools
💼 Jobs for digital workers and entrepreneurs
🏥 Telemedicine for remote communities
📢 Civic voice and democratic engagement
🌍 Africa’s self-determined future
Thanks to local Internet Village infrastructure, we’ve made the internet faster, cheaper, and more reliable for underserved communities in The Gambia—and we’re just getting started.
🎓 How Internet Village Supports Local Technical Groups
We don’t just build infrastructure—we build people.
Through Vision2030, we provide education and hands-on training in everything from networking to AI integration.
We work with local builders, youth, and digital workers to develop the skills needed to design, deploy, and maintain infrastructure in their own communities.
Many of our engineers are also part of Glocal (global + local) networks that contribute to regional and international standards.
Because where there is internet infrastructure, there must also be people with the knowledge to power it.
🔭 Vision2030: An Internet for Everyone
At Internet Village, our goal is bold but simple:
No village left behind. No youth disconnected. No talent wasted.
Through infrastructure, education, and technical community development, we are building Africa’s most inclusive digital network—led by the people who live in the very communities we serve.
Start where you are. Build what you need. Connect who you love. The Internet Village is rising—and with it, so is a New Africa.
